RILA and NRF Merge; Mullin Retires
Kennedy will likely take over, bring larger retailers with her

MullinThe Retail Industry Leaders Association and the National Retail Federation have agreed to merge, resulting in a single integrated association representing retail. Tracy Mullin, who has been president of NRF since the 90s, will retire.

Changing of the guard

RILA president Sandy Kennedy, who was previously a senior vice president at NRF, will likely take over as RILA's president. Kennedy would bring with her strong relationships with the CEOs of big-box retailers, like Wal-Mart and Target, that have avoided NRF.

NRF has long suffered from its estrangement from Wal-Mart, resulting in a focus on issues affecting smaller, Main Street retailers. The new, integrated RILA/NRF merged entity would be free to address a wider base of issues with a considerably broader and more powerful membership.

Sandy Kennedy

Kennedy, at right, specializes in creating consensus around topics of common interest with very senior executives. She enjoys the confidence of retail's top CEOs, who see her as willing to tackle the issues that retail has largely avoided. It is her close working relationships with the CEOs of the largest retail companies that will bring the two organizations together. Kennedy became president of RILA, formerly the International Mass Retail Association, and in only a few years hired the right staff to bring it to national prominence. RILA's conferences, including the Logistics and Loss Prevention Conferences, lead the industry in their segments.

The future

Retail's trade associations have traditionally been small and underfunded, and focused more on generating trade show revenue than changing minds on Capitol Hill. This is in notable contrast to the associations of more powerful industries like petroleum and pharmaceuticals. It remains to be seen if the new association's members will want to have a more robust voice on Capitol Hill and in state houses around the US, but new management at a combined new RILA/NRF entity will give them a stronger opportunity to shape their own future.
